What Are the Noon Sakinah and Tanween Rules in Tajweed?
A silent noon (Noon Sakinah) or a double vowel sound (Tanween) is pronounced in one of four ways, depending on the letter that follows it: Idhhar (clear), Idgham (merged), Iqlab (converted), or Ikhfa (hidden).
| Rule | Letters that follow | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|
1IdhharClear pronunciation |
ء ه ع ح غ خ6 throat letters | The noon is pronounced clearly from its own articulation point, with no merging and no nasal hold. |
2IdghamMerging |
With ghunnahي ن م وWithout ghunnahل ر6 letters in total | The noon merges into the letter that follows. With the first four letters a nasal tone (ghunnah) is held during the merge; with the last two there is no nasal tone. |
3IqlabConversion |
ب1 letter | The noon changes into a meem sound, held with a light nasal tone (ghunnah), before the ba. |
4IkhfaHiding |
ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك15 letters | The noon is partly hidden: not fully clear and not fully merged, held with a light nasal tone (ghunnah) before moving to the next letter. |
Together these four rules cover all 28 Arabic letters (6 + 6 + 1 + 15) and apply to both Noon Sakinah and Tanween. A tutor corrects each one live in class.
